Fussy eaters

Thomas the eldest is very fussy with food. He likes ketchup with most things but trying to get the kids away from that all the time. He doesn’t like his beans sauce touching other food, if some chips have the sauce on that’s it they are off the plate. Nothing can touch each other. He doesn’t like mince or sauces on spaghetti/pasta etc. It’s very hard to think of healthy tea time meals for him, you can’t hide veg in anything as anything with a little lump then gets an investigation from him and his fork until he works out what the lump is!
You burn something by accident and he’s on your case, ‘Mam what’s this black on my fish finger?’ ‘It’s no sauce or anything Thomas, just where i burnt it a little.’ His reply goes along the lines of  ‘Oh, well maybe you should be careful cooking next time, and try not to burn everything.’ Yep thanks son, i am obviously not Nigella Lawson, and yes i do burn things (sometimes) but i was brought up with things being more on the overcooked side of things.

Meat has to be well done for me, i know my meat is done when it’s got burnt marks. If it hasn’t i’m dubious to as if i have cooked it enough.

Where did i get such a fussy eater like Thomas from? I have no idea, when he was younger i home cooked everything, he only got jar foods when out and about, i done it by the books. So why isn’t he following the books, guidelines on eating food? I have come to the conclusion that if you feed your child on jarred food it doesn’t necessarily mean they wont be fussy eaters. I know children who had jars most of the time as babies and they eat great now as children, but do all of them??

How does a child actually become fussy from eating everything? At what point does that change? I have no idea! I would love to know what made Thomas how he is now with his food. Getting his 5 a day isn’t too hard, he has fruit at school, an apple/banana/grapes for snack when he gets home, then dinner usually has atleast one veg in it. My problem is thinking of recipes for the fussy eater.

I had a jar of vegetable paprika bake, so last night instead of actually using the veg (as i know if i put veg in sauce he would stick his nose up at it) i used chicken, onion and sweetcorn. He doesn’t like sweetcorn but me and the hubby do so we added it. Plated it up for him just gave him chicken and he ate it, no fuss. So the boy likes that, i will buy more now, and maybe he will move onto eating the sweetcorn and onions too? I’d say some of his fussyness is down to texture more than taste. I know my hatred for mushrooms is, they are so rubbery and i can’t stand them on my tongue, but the taste, although i find isn’t too bad (not a favourite) i can’t have them. Even chopped up small, i know when they are in my mouth and come straight back out.

I do wonder if i passed some of my small fussiness onto Thomas?

He has got better this last year. He never ate broccoli, but now will eat 2 florets of it. We call it trees, daddys trees. So of course if hubby says ‘Don’t eat my trees’ he will eat them. Now we don’t need to says that as he has got ‘used’ to eating them without a fuss. Along with a few more. I would love the time to come when he will eat spag bol properly, cottage pie, mince and dumplings and everything else he claims are ‘Yuk!’
