Cake decorating

I always thought cake decorating would be so easy. Until i tried it for myself. I found a perfect cake recipe, easy and simple to follow and it went well first time, and every time after that, fab! Get to the decorating and i realised just how hard it was. I done my first cake for Thomas’ 3rd birthday Jan 2010 and since then done birthday cakes for all kids birthdays and families birthdays (hubby, parents, sister and BIL).  They never turn out as good as what the picture is in my head, but i do enjoy it even if i am rubbish at it.

I went to my first cake decorating class yesterday, run by welfare. Christmas special, didn’t know what to expect as i was put on it last minute. I thought maybe decorating little cupcakes etc. Get there to find a Christmas cake in a box (cooked by the chefs in the army) eekk, what are we doing i thought. We have 4 1 and half hour sessions to decorate a Christmas cake. 6 hours!? That’s it? Oh dear. I come up with an idea, penguins/santa skating on ice. Why did that picture come into my head? Why? We get given white rolled icing, so if it needs colouring you do it yourself, great! So to make my Santas or Penguins i have to colour each icing colour myself. This can take sometime. So in my first session i got the board iced, the cake iced and made my iced over waterfall. That is all i had time for. 4 and half hours left to make the Santas/Penguins and finish decorating the cake, hmm… so next week i need to work fast, others have started decorating with snowmans, trees, presents already. Panic setting in. Also got told they can go in for a yearly competition down London. Ha i don’t think i will be putting in my mess of a cake, but i enjoyed it alot. First time doing a cake without kids coming in to watch and ask questions.

I thought i would share some of my cakes, bear in mind i am no where near professional stage, nor will i ever be!

Thomas’ 4th birthday cake, bearing in mind Jessica was only 9 days old, why i thought this many layers would be a great idea i don’t know, took ages to do!

Yep 6 different coloured layers of sponge! I have yet to match or beat this one in the height department.
